I've seen a lot throughout my years as an NFL fan: a quarterback as mediocre as Trent Dilfer win a Superbowl; an unstoppable, undefeated team lose a Superbowl to a wildcard team; a man shoot himself in the leg and go to prison, only to return to the league. But one thing I'd never imagine, is a team one year removed from winning a division title stoop to worst record in the league. The 2011 Kansas City Chiefs, though, may just do that.
Take one of the luckiest division winners of all time, and take away their best defensive player, Eric Berry. Then, take away their best offensive player, Jamaal Charles. Then, take away their second best receiver, Tony Moeaki. And finally, take their overrated quarterback, Matt Cassell, and bruise his ribs. That's the Chiefs right now. How anyone could think these guys are in good shape is beyond me.
What you have here is a team with few remaining offensive weapons, a serious void on defense, and a surprisingly strong division, with the Chargers looking like the favorite and the Raiders looking somewhat relevant for the first time in years. Even a seemingly constantly rebuilding Broncos team seems to have the upper-hand on the Chiefs right now, after KC's embarrassing 48-3 loss to the Lions.
It just seems crazy to me that a team that hosted a playoff game last winter could be as bad as this. Even though I thought they played beyond themselves last year, I wouldn't have predicted them to look this bad. That said, who would have thought that a convicted dog-fighter could win NFL Comeback Player of the Year, right?
